Zero value and no previous period data

Data Overview: Zero value and no previous period data

When the indicator shows 0

If you see the indicator as 0, indicating that there are indeed no records that meet the conditions in the current application, Region and time range. For example:

Identification events: 0
Unique visitors: 0
Risk events: 0

0, blank, and are not the same:

  • 0: The query has completed with indeed zero results.
  • or "No data yet": There is currently not enough data for display or comparison.
  • Loading failure prompt: The system has not successfully completed the query.

see 0, there is no need to treat it as an exception. You can first confirm whether the time range is correct, and then determine whether the business has indeed not generated an identification request.

When there is no data in the previous period

If there is data in the current period but no comparable data in the previous period, the page will display , "No data" or "No data for the previous period" instead of displaying 0%.

Common situations include:

  • The application has just been connected and there is no record of the previous cycle.
  • The previous period exceeded the data retention period of the current plan.
  • Data from the previous cycle is still being processed or cannot be loaded temporarily.
  • There are no results available for the current filter in the previous cycle.

At this time, you can only see the actual quantity of the current cycle, and cannot judge the growth rate based on the month-on-month percentage.

Why doesn't +100% or -100% appear?

The period-over-period calculation requires the previous period as the denominator:

Period-over-period change = (current period - previous period) / previous period

When the previous period is 0 or has no data, no denominator is available. Therefore, the page will not display the first batch of data for the new application as+100%, nor would it be interpreted as "doubling".

Likewise, none of the following displays represent real growth:

  • The first time a new application generates data, it displays "+100%".
  • There is no data in the previous period, but "-100%" is displayed.
  • The data loading is incomplete, but the complete month-on-month percentage is directly displayed.

Both the current period and the previous period are 0

If there are no records that meet the conditions in both periods, the page will display the actual values of the two periods as 0, chain display or "no change data".

This means:

  • There are no records for the current period.
  • There is no record of the previous period either.
  • There is no change that can be used to calculate the percentage.

It does not mean that the system is faulty, nor does it mean that business is down 100%.

How to understand when the data is incomplete

If the data of the current period or the previous period is affected by the data retention period, processing delay, or query exception, the page will prompt that the data is incomplete, cannot be compared, or please try again later.

When you see this kind of prompt:

  1. Do not regard the currently displayed partial data as complete cycle data.
  2. Don’t judge growth or decline based on incomplete data.
  3. Confirm whether the selected time range exceeds the data retention period.
  4. Try again later, or go to the event page to confirm whether there is still data delay.
  5. If the problem persists, contact Geelab support and provide application, region, time range and page tips.

The month-on-month percentage is suitable for business judgment only when complete and comparable data are available for both the current period and the previous period.

Illustration: Zero value and no previous period data

It is recommended to create four customer-visible states: current value is 0, no data in the previous period, both periods are 0, and data is incomplete. Each chart should show both the indicator number and the comparable area.
